Proof That I Am Old

Tonight, as I was procrastinating getting back to studying, The Lawyer and I were watching Rock Central--this news magazine show for boring grown-up types like us.

It was storming outside, and in between watching the lightning, I was paying attention to a story on US Olympic hopeful Gabby Douglas.  The commentator mentioned that the last time the US won gold in team gymnastics was 16 years ago.

I'm mildly obsessed with Olympic gymnastics, so I immediately interjected.

"But what about that girl who landed on her broken foot?  Didn't US get gold that year?"

"You mean Kerri Strug?," The Lawyer asked.

He Googled her name and replied,

"That was in 1996.  So, yes, 16 years ago."

Oh. snap.

You guys, I remember 1996.  Well.  I watched those Olympics and got misty eyed after that vault and screamed at the TV with joy when the US won gold.

And, apparently, that was 16 years ago.

I remember that well. And I was older than Kerri then, too! Age may just be a number or a state of mind but it still stinks.

Oh Red guess what?? I'm mildly obsessed with Olympic gymnastics too! I remember that year that Kerri won the gold and it doesn't nearly seem THAT long ago. I look forward to watching the USA team again this summer and hopefully they can win another Gold, but I'd be happy with silver or bronze too.

It doesn't seem like that long ago, but I just rewatched the women's gymnastics on the internet and it's amazing how dated it looks now. Things like scrunchies were awesome, weren't they?

I'm a little obsessed, too. I may have been saving up my vacation time to sit at home and watch the Olympics...don't judge me...

I purposely scheduled my time off to study for Step 2 to coincide with the Olympics.

OMG, yeah, i remember watching that Olympics. I also vaguely remember 1992-Tatiana Gutsu was my hero for a while.

My best friend is a high school French teacher and made a Zoolander reference to his class-only 1 kid got it. They were born AFTER THE LION KING CAME OUT.

I went back and watched a clip of Kerri Strug performing her vault, and the shot of her parents in the stands is priceless. Her mother's glasses are so unbelievably 80s!
