Given the timing of our relationship, The Lawyer and I don’t get to travel very much. To me, a perfect weekend these days is sleeping in late, emerging from my bed long enough to eat something mildly brunchy and delicious, and then, returning to bed to indulge a food coma and sleep my way through the rest of the weekend. I know. I’m so exciting, you can’t stand it.
This past weekend, though, the long weekend coincided with the completion of a Friday exam. And, as the heavens parted and the sun shone down around us, The Lawyer and I realized that we had three glorious days off!
We immediately planned our escape.
Since we had postponed Valentine’s Day until after my exams, the weekend began with a quiet gift exchange on Friday night. After eating a romantic dinner prepared by The Lawyer, we watched a Sabbath-friendly documentary, and The Lawyer rubbed my feet in bed. I had to teach the little kids’ Sabbath School the following morning, but after I was done, we ate a quick lunch and got on the road.
Driving out of the city, towards I-295, on Saturday.
It was an amazing day, if you were in DC.
Why hello there, Jefferson Memorial.
The Lawyer booked us a waterfront view room at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Resort and Spa, which IN THEORY, was a great idea. When I was studying for my exam last week, all that I comprehended him saying was “waterfront” and “massage.” My response was probably something along the lines, “Yesss! Book that!”
Unfortunately, what we didn’t anticipate was hundreds (and I do mean hundreds) of loud, rowdy kids running and screaming through the resort. The only conclusion that we could reach was that schools must have had February break, because there were kids everywhere. We didn’t get our waterfront view room, because the hotel was overbooked. I also didn’t get a massage appointment, because the spa was both fully booked and in the process of moving locations. We didn’t eat at the hotel’s in-house restaurant, The Water’s Edge, because the concierge advised against it “due to the number of kids here this weekend,” and to top it all off, the customer service ranged from mediocre to terrible.
I’m sure that all of this was just some cruel joke from the universe, since I never get long weekends off, but it’s fine. I put in earplugs at night to tune out the banging as kids ran through the hallway and parents yelled, “Stop that!,” and “Get into the room!” Then, I reamed out the Hyatt out on a Yelp! review, because if people who love kids (like The Lawyer and I) were annoyed, I assure you that things were out of hand.
Anyway, that was a bit tangential, and not the point of this entry.
We did get upgraded to our waterfront room on the second night, and thankfully, it was in its own little alcove away from the screaming children.
Then, I enjoyed a luscious nap, while The Lawyer listened to podcasts he had been saving, and we had a decent dinner at the adults-only restaurant on the golf course. The next morning, we went on a long walk through the grounds of the hotel. Most of the families were checking out by this time, and things were (finally) quiet and peaceful.
As you probably remember from my summer travels, I love taking vacation photos, but one of the downfalls of maintaining a blog that’s anonymous is that you can’t post digital photos of yourself. Way back in the dark ages, I used to print photos, but even then, I admit that I wasn’t the best about organizing them into an album or scrapbook. Now that I use a digital camera (or iPhone), the possibility that I might actually print photos, go to the craft store to pick out scrapbooking papers, and actually sit down to make an album, is non-existent.
Last month, My Memories Digital Scrapbooking sent me a free software package to try out. Although I was never a big scrapbooker, I do love the idea of being able to play with fun backgrounds, papers, and fonts in a digital format. For people like me, who are less likely to print out their photos anyway, it’s a quick and easy way to fancy up photos and show them off in a creative, put-together way.
And, especially for people whose parents are a bit technologically challenged (*cough*) and who complain about email attachments and photo sharing sites constantly (*cough cough*), sending a digital scrapbook is a great way to highlight vacation photos, add captions, and make your photos shine without very much effort.
As part of their sponsorship, My Memories is giving away one of their My Memories Suite V3 software packages for one lucky reader! It's a great toy for new scrapbookers, or even anonymous bloggers who want to share photos with family and friends (ahem), to organize their photos.

There are two ways to enter:
1. (MANDATORY): Go to www.mymemories.com and tell me what page you would make first in your digital scrapbook (Birthday? Vacation? Graduation? Baby shower?). For non-Bloggers, anonymous commenting has been enabled, but you MUST leave a name or pseudonym AND an email address for me to contact you.
2. Bonus entry (Optional): Follow this blog through Google Friend Connect, RSS feed, or by linking to this blog on your website. Leave a separate comment telling me that you’re following or linked.
On Wednesday, February 29, one commenter will be chosen via Random.org to receive their free copy of the My Memories Suite.
In the meantime, you can get $10 off the My Memories Suite by using code STMMMS45635. Since that code is a little complicated and crazy, you might want to copy and paste it before you checkout!
Good luck!

Hi! I don't think I have ever commented on your blog before, but I love living vicariously through your relationships! haha! I am a PA student and can relate to you never ending pile of studying.
The first page I would do would be a sports one for one of my kids. Since returning to school scrapbooking has become a thing of the past!
So, I am actually a HUGE scrapbooker. High school, one book for every year of college, and now my gap year master's program.
The first page in my scrapbook? My acceptance to med school--a picture of me holding it with a ginormous grin on my face AND clips of rejection letters because I like rubbing things like that in people's faces!
Also, your life is SO glamorous--it may not seem that way, but working on a profession you love and sharing little moments of your life with someone who wants to share theirs with you? Pretty frickin' glamorous. I'm jelly (in a good way!) :)
I'm totally interested in this give-away! My first page would revolve around my graduating from nursing school!

Stephanie- You're so sweet! I know that you commiserate...we have PA students in our classes, so you definitely feel my pain.
Elena- Seriously, what a nice comment. I do NOT feel glamorous most of the time, and The Lawyer tolerates a LOT from me!
Zazzy- Yay! Graduation!
Also, I can't tell if Blogger is being wonky or if two of you intentionally posted the same thing twice for the additional entry. If you meant to do the bonus entry, would you mind commenting again with just "I follow" or "I'm linked" for the second entry? Right now, I can't tell if it's just a Blogger fluke! Thanks!
Hi, the first page I would do would be "Simply Magical" with pictures of my nieces and nephews- it's such a fun design. I've never digitally scrapbooked, so this would be a great opportunity to give it a try.

I also follow on Google.

The first thing I'd do is chronicle my time before med school, back when I used to have time to take LOTS of pictures.
Then I might sort through the various shenanigans I've been up to since starting med school with the minimal photographic evidence.
I'm the same way! The last time I moved, I threw out all my old scrapbooking stuff because it just seems like too much effort! This software looks amazing and I'll probably end up with less paper cuts! I'd definitely love to do a 2011 vacations scrapbook...we were traveling every month and I'd love to have all the pictures in one location.
I just added your blog to my google reader and my blog list on my webpage. :)
Only one entry for me. I have a blog, but nothing linked on it. I started it after my son died, but I just didn't have the zest for writing in me at the time. I would like to get into it more again but so far I only write my blog entries in my head! haha! If I ever get going again I will so be linking you tho! :)
My first page would have current pictures of my two daughters and then subsequent pages would have them getting younger and younger until the days that they were born. A sort of 'in the end is the beginning approach'.
I come from a really interesting family; my mother was a holocaust survivor, and my father was buddies with Werner Von Braun (after the war, when he was working in our space program), so I'd do a scrapbook page on my parents. The more I learn about them, the more fascinating they are. Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend, despite the kids. I agree with the other commentator who is living vicariously through your posts. I love them!
(1) I need to make a scrapbook of my holidays in Colombia (the country, not the university) this past Christmas and New Years. I've started making scrapbooks for my boyfriend's family of all the trips we have together, and I find that pictures are the best way to cross the language barrier. And scrapbooks make the best presents. Who doesn't love memories??
(2) I already follow you through Google Friend Connect and you're already linked on my blog. :)
I make a book of every trip my husband and I go on. I have even made a couple of books as special gifts to my cousin who has us over for Christmas or Thanksgiving!
I use Blurb.com. You don't need software...you just download their program for free...it's very easy to use and the quality of the paper and the quality of the printing is exceptional! You can stop part way into it, and then resume when you like. I think I have approximately 10 or so books so far. They are great to hand to people who ask about your trip...and they can look through it as fast or slow as they wish.
Nice thing is, I usually post it from the site onto facebook so anyone I like can peruse through it. They can also order it online or look at it online. Just send the link. This was useful for the 2 family reunions we had. I just sent out the link to everyone after I put together the book and each person ordered their own. ($16 for 40 page book soft cover) They can order as a soft back or hard cover, whatever they like.
It could also be a fund raiser, in that you could put together your school year or project or whatever and then put your own price on it.
I have sent copies of different albums to various relatives as gifts also....or weddings etc.
It's very easy to use, you can use any number of templates that are easy to switch between, and you can put your own story/writing/captions on it.
Lately I have not had the time to do our latest trip, but I will get there eventually.
:) I am thinking the one you use is similar...
My first page would be MATCH DAY, if I survive these next three weeks. Someone should do a study trending the blood pressure of fourth years during the period between submission of the rank list and the match. Then I would fill up the rest of the book as I graduate, move, and transition into residency.
Thank you for finding time during medical school to blog. Second year is tough with all the lectures and step 1, third year is long hours, but I promise, fourth year is awesome.
-Mackenzie
Mackenzie- I'm trying not to respond, as to not mess up the numbering of comments, but I just wanted to say thanks for the encouragement! Some days I'm just bitter, angry, and fearful that I'm going to pass out from exhaustion. It makes me feel so much better when people tell me that it's SUPPOSED to be like this, and that it will get better!
I dream of the day when I will have time to play with photos again! As others have mentioned, that day likely won't happen until after graduation. As such, my first album/page would chronicle my time in grad school. Or perhaps just the celebratory family vacation after graduation :)
You've been in my Google reader practically since I figured out what Google reader is. Also linked to my blog.
BTW, I'm loving the tales of you and The Lawyer. Sigh. Tales of romance (fans self). While I see relationships struggling the rigors of grad school, it's refreshing to see the beginning of one. And a reminder of what made it great in the first place and worth the work now.
